It’s been a long time since I last played Fortnite, at least until recently. During a youth conference in Shreveport, I was surrounded by a ton of kids diving into the game. And honestly? Their excitement was contagious. But what really got me was one bold little guy at church who grinned up at me and said, “Hey Pastor Dallas, I bet you can’t do a devotion based on Fortnite.”

Well… challenge accepted.

The Storm Is Closing In

For those who haven’t played, Fortnite drops you and a bunch of other players onto a giant map. As time goes on, a storm starts to close in, shrinking your safe zone. If you stay behind too long, your health begins to fade.

The key to survival? Pay attention. Move with the storm. Shift when the season changes.

That idea of shifting applies way beyond video games. In Ecclesiastes 3:1, Solomon reminds us that there’s a time and a season for everything, joy and sorrow, beginnings and endings.

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens”

But sometimes, we get so caught up in what’s happening right now that we forget to look at the bigger picture. Before long, the “storm” of life catches up to us.

So how do we handle transitions and storms?

1. Check Your Map

In Fortnite, good players keep an eye on the map. It shows where the storm’s moving so you can plan your next step. In life, our “map” is prayer and scripture. That’s how we get direction.

God sees the entire field, the whole layout of our lives, while we’re just focused on what’s right in front of us. He’s the one who says, “Hey, it’s time to move. This season’s ending. I’ve got something better ahead.”

And yeah, it’s not always easy. Change rarely is. But trusting God’s timing means trusting that His next zone is safer, stronger, and full of purpose.

2. Don’t Dwell on the Past

When God told the Israelites in Isaiah 43:18-19 not to dwell on the past, it wasn’t because their past didn’t matter; it was because He was doing something new.

Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!…

The same applies to us. There’s nothing wrong with honoring where you’ve been, but don’t get stuck there.

3. Be content with God’s Provision

In Philippians 4:11-13, Paul talks about finding contentment in every situation because he trusted that God’s provision would meet him wherever he was. And that’s the key. Even if the transition feels rough, even if the storm left you tired and scraped up, God has already given you what you need to heal and keep moving forward.

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

4. Squad Up

Here’s the part a lot of us forget: Fortnite’s a lot easier when you’re not alone. Playing in squads means you’ve got people watching your back, reviving you, and helping you through the storm.

That’s why community is so important. Hebrews 10:24-25 reminds us not to neglect gathering together.

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

When you’ve got people walking through life with you, encouraging you, praying for you, it changes everything. That’s what we’re all about here at Geek Devotions. You’re not alone in your storm.

So here’s the big takeaway: pay attention to the season you’re in. Check your map through prayer and scripture. Don’t cling to the past. Trust God’s timing. And for the love of all things geeky, don’t go solo, stay in community.

Life shifts. Seasons change. But you can move forward confidently knowing that the God who leads you is the same one who sustains you.
