Sometimes the smallest things can spark the biggest changes. This week’s Geek Devotions takes inspiration from Silksong and reminds us that the early steps we take, even when they feel small or insignificant, can set the stage for something that impacts lives in ways we can’t yet see.
Silksong didn’t come out of nowhere. It’s the sequel to Hollow Knight, but even Hollow Knight had humble beginnings. Its roots go back to a quick flash game called Hungry Knight, created for a competition. In that simple game, players walk around fighting enemies, collecting items to feed the knight’s hunger, and unlocking mysterious ghost-like masks until reaching an altar that suggests the cycle never ends. It was thrown together quickly, but that tiny project sparked years of development that eventually led to Hollow Knight and now Silksong.
What’s incredible is how far that small start has come. When Silksong dropped, it was so popular that it crashed servers for Nintendo, Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox as players rushed to download it. This little $20 indie game even outranked some major AAA titles.
It’s a powerful reminder that big results don’t always require big beginnings. The small steps taken early, when done with care and intention, lay a foundation for something much bigger.
Scripture echoes this truth. Zechariah 4:10 says, “or whoever has despised the day of small things shall rejoice, and shall see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel…”
In this passage, Zerubbabel was laying the foundation of the temple after years of captivity. The work may have seemed small compared to the glory of the former temple, but those first steps mattered. They were setting the path for what was coming next.
That same principle is true today. It’s easy to feel frustrated when progress seems slow or when a dream feels far away. It’s tempting to want to skip ahead to the “big moments.” But these small beginnings are where character is formed, skills are sharpened, and the future is shaped.
Even the smallest acts of kindness can change someone’s life forever. Something as simple as encouraging a friend, helping someone in need, or choosing to serve faithfully can take someone from the brink of giving up to realizing they have hope and purpose.
So don’t give up, and don’t rush past the small steps. They are not wasted. Be faithful with what is in front of you. Take the time to cultivate what needs to grow, and trust that God is using this season to prepare something far bigger than what you can see right now. Like Abraham, who stepped out with only a promise, these first steps may feel small — but they are setting the course for everything to come.
Step well. Step with confidence. Step with the peace that comes from the Lord. The small beginnings you’re in right now might just be the spark that changes everything.
