Over the last several weeks, we’ve been on a journey of Discovering Faith. In Part One, we discussed what faith is and how it’s a beautiful blend of past, present, and future. Then, in part two, we explored what saving faith really means. Last time, we explored faithfulness, what it means to remain steady and committed.
And now here we are… wrapping up the series by talking about something powerful and honestly kind of mysterious: The Gift of Faith. See the full video below.
So, what is the Gift of Faith?
This idea originates from 1 Corinthians 12, where Paul outlines the gifts of the Spirit, which God gives to His people to help us complete the mission of helping others meet Jesus. And right there in the middle of all these amazing gifts, like healing and miracles, you find faith. But this isn’t just general faith or saving faith, it’s something different.
This is a supernatural, God-sourced faith that empowers us to believe for big things, even when it doesn’t make sense. It’s not something we drum up on our own. It’s something God gives, and it’s anchored in His faithfulness, not our feelings.
Let’s talk anime for a second…
To help us understand this better, let’s look at one of our favorite animes, My Hero Academia. You’ve got this kid, Midoriya. No powers, no quirks, nothing special. But then, All Might, this hero he’s looked up to his whole life, someone you could say he has put his faith in, gives him something incredible: the “One For All” quirk.
Midoriya didn’t earn it. He didn’t create it. It was passed on to him. And that quirk opens up a whole new world of responsibility and possibility.
That’s what the gift of faith is like. It’s not something we manufacture. It’s something God places in us, a faith that is from Him… to move mountains, to trust for miracles, to step into impossible situations with confidence not in ourselves, but in God.
Past – Present – Future
Like the other parts of this series, we want to break this down into three parts.
The Past:
This gift is rooted in God’s faith, not yours. In Mark 11, when Jesus tells His disciples to “have faith in God,” the original Greek can be translated as “have God’s faith.” It’s not about self-confidence. It’s about putting your trust in God’s very faith.
The Present:
This kind of faith gives you authority, but it also demands humility. We see this in Acts 3 when Peter heals the lame man. Everyone’s freaking out, but Peter says, “Whoa! Don’t look at us like we did this by our own power.” When you walk in the gift of faith, you’ve got to hold that tension: yes, God is using you… But no, it’s not about you.
Also, be careful not to fall into false humility. Saying “Oh, it wasn’t me at all!” to the point where you act like God didn’t even use you? That can also become a weird kind of pride. Just say “thank you,” give God the glory, and move forward.
The Future:
Now, what do we do with this? Simple, we step out in obedience. We trust that God’s the one calling us onto the water, and He’s the one who’s going to hold us up. Whether it’s praying for someone, speaking a word, or stepping into a scary moment, you’re not acting on your own. You’re trusting in the gift God gave you.
Back to My Hero Academia…
Midoriya has to learn how to carry this massive power. He can’t get cocky, but he also can’t pretend he’s powerless. And that’s the same with us. The gift of faith is something God entrusts to us, and as we grow in it, we must rely on Him, stay humble, and remember that we’re not meant to do this alone.
And here’s the cool part: just like All Might passed One For All to Midoriya, and it was passed down before that, your stepping out in faith can spark something in someone else. When you step out in the gift of faith, it becomes a testimony. That testimony can lead someone to saving faith. And as they walk with Jesus, they grow in faithfulness. And then one day…boom! God may entrust them with the gift of faith in a moment that then sparks a moment for someone else.
It’s a cycle. A legacy. A spiritual inheritance being passed from one generation to the next.
Wrapping it all up…
