Saving faith is more than just believing something in your head or feeling something in your heart. It’s a real, full-on step forward. In this episode, we break down what saving faith actually is and how it plays out in real life.

Using The Matrix as a metaphor, we walk through the three key parts of saving faith: hearing the truth, being convicted by it, and taking that next step into action. Just like Neo had to make a choice, red pill or blue pill, we all come to a moment where we decide what we’re going to do with what we’ve heard and what we feel. Whether you’re a long-time believer or just now asking questions about Jesus, this conversation is for you.

Blog

A couple of weeks ago, we started a conversation about faith, exploring what it is, how it operates, and why it matters. We discussed the idea that faith isn’t just a “feeling,” but rather something built from three key elements: the past, the present, and the future, all coming together. And today, we’re continuing that conversation, but with a very specific focus: saving faith.

Now, to be clear, this is Part 2 of our overall faith series, but it’s also kind of Part 1 of a mini-series within the series where we break down the three types of faith:

  • Saving Faith
  • The Fruit of the Spirit (Faithfulness)
  • The Gift of Faith

Today, we’re zoning in on saving faith. This is the kind of faith that brings salvation. You’ve probably heard the verse before:

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.”
— Ephesians 2:8

So what does that actually mean? To help us unpack this idea, we will be using some illustrations from the 1999 Sci-Fi film, The Matrix.

Past: Hearing the Truth

The starting point of saving faith is hearing the truth. Romans 10:17 tells us,

“Faith comes by hearing, and hearing through the Word of Christ.”

That hearing comes in all kinds of ways, through preaching, testimonies from friends, and even just everyday conversations where someone shares what God is doing in their life.

And let’s be real: that doesn’t have to be weird or super-churchy. You don’t have to shout or get up on a soapbox. Sometimes it’s just, “Hey, I read this in my Bible today, and it really challenged me.” That’s testimony. That’s planting seeds of truth.

Even creation testifies. Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God.” You can look at a mountain range or the night sky and just know that something bigger is out there. That won’t lead someone to Jesus all by itself, but it points the way. C.S. Lewis put it best:

“We may ignore, but we can nowhere evade the presence of God. The world is crowded with Him. He walks everywhere incognito.”

That intellectual awareness, that stirring, that’s the beginning of saving faith.

In The Matrix, Neo started hearing rumors of something beyond his boring office job. Whispers about “The Matrix.” That’s the past stage: taking in info, noticing the signs, hearing the truth.

Present: Emotional Conviction

But head knowledge alone doesn’t save us.

Even the demons knew who Jesus was. Judas understood who Jesus was. But knowing the truth doesn’t mean you’ve surrendered to it.

That’s where conviction comes in, and no, we’re not talking about just feeling guilty or having a moment of self-pity. True conviction is something deeper. It’s a Holy Spirit moment. John 16:8 states that the Spirit convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment. That’s not your job, by the way, it’s His.

In The Matrix, once Neo heard the truth, he had a moment of emotional reckoning. He felt something wasn’t right. He knew there was more, and it stirred something inside him. That’s the present piece of saving faith: conviction.

Future: Taking Action

And finally, there’s action.

This is where many people get stuck. Some people stay in the intellectual zone, thinking about God but never responding. Others live in the emotional zone, always chasing a feeling, but never changing.

Saving faith brings it all together and produces repentance. Not just saying, “Oops, my bad,” but a real 180° turn, “I was wrong. I’m choosing a new path. I’m putting Jesus in charge.”

Repentance is where the fruit of saving faith shows up. It’s the real sign that something has shifted in your life. You’ve moved beyond ideas and emotions into a life that says, “Jesus, You’re King. I trust You. I’ll follow You.”

Back to Neo for a second, that red pill moment? That was his action step. He chose to step into something unknown because he knew he couldn’t stay the same. He didn’t have all the answers. He wasn’t some kung fu master or code-bending legend yet. But he took the step. He chose.

And when someone chooses to follow Jesus, they become a new creation. But here’s the deal: they don’t come out of the water knowing all the answers. They don’t suddenly have every Bible verse memorized or know how to navigate church culture. They’re new, and like Neo learning to walk again, new believers need time, grace, and community.

The Role of Community

That’s where we come in, y’all. Jesus talked about seeds being scattered on all types of soil. Some take root. Some get choked by thorns. And that’s where the body of Christ comes in, to help clear the path. We must do our best to disciple people with grace as they grow in the Lord.

So if you’re a believer, here’s the challenge:
🔧 What are you doing to clear the thorns for young Christians around you?
🧭 Are you sharing your testimony? Are you discipling others? Are you encouraging growth?

And if you’re not a believer, if you’re reading this and thinking, “I’m not sure where I stand with all this…” then first of all, thanks for sticking with us. Seriously.

Here’s what we want you to know:
You are loved. You are seen. God has a plan for your life.

Yes, sin is real. Yes, it separates us from God. But God made a way through Jesus. You don’t have to earn it. You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to take that next step.

Final Thoughts + A Question for You

Saving faith is a journey. It starts with hearing. It moves with conviction. It grows through action.

Where are you in that process?

And for those of you walking with Jesus, what are you doing to help others on their journey?
