Understanding the Full Story: Lessons from Spider-Man and Scripture
The new Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man cartoon is out, and Dallas and I absolutely love it! While watching, I hopped onto Marvel Unlimited and discovered a companion comic that fills in some of the gaps from the first episode. It doesn’t spoil any major plot points but gives a broader understanding of the world and enhances the story. This got me thinking—having the full picture makes a huge difference, not just in entertainment but also in our faith.
Why Context Matters
A while back, we put out a video on Geek Devotions about the importance of context, and this Spider-Man comic is a great example of why it matters. Without context, we miss crucial details. The same is true when we study Scripture. To fully grasp what’s being said, we need to understand the historical and cultural background, who was writing it, and what was happening at the time.
Would the Bible still be impactful without this knowledge? Absolutely. But would we understand everything perfectly? Not necessarily. Even with all the resources available, there are things only God fully comprehends. However, when we take the time to learn more, we gain a deeper understanding of God’s message.
The Danger of an Incomplete Story
Imagine knowing the story of Adam and Eve but not knowing about God’s redemption. Or understanding that Jesus died for our sins but not realizing He calls us to live a life modeled after His righteousness. Without the full picture, we miss essential truths that shape our faith and walk with God.
Practical Ways to Gain Context
If we want to grow in our understanding of Scripture, here are a few simple ways to gain context:
- Read full stories, not just single verses. Follow the flow of thought from one section to another.
- Check the surrounding verses. When reading a verse, look at the one before and after it to better understand.
- Study entire chapters. If possible, read the chapter before and after to see the bigger picture.
- Use study resources. Even if you don’t have a Bible study or commentary, plenty of free online resources help deepen your understanding.
Understanding context isn’t just about knowledge—it’s about truly grasping what God is speaking to us. Just like the Spider-Man comic helped fill in the gaps of the cartoon, studying Scripture with context helps us see the bigger story of God’s love, grace, and purpose for our lives.
