Today on Geek Devotions, Dallas explains why being told “You’re kind of weird” was one of the most impactful things someone has ever said to him.
You’re Kind of Weird—And That’s Okay
Have you ever been told you’re weird? Maybe it felt like an insult or just left you wondering what people see in you. Being told I was weird ended up being one of the most impactful things anyone has ever said to me.
Recently, Celeste and I lost someone very dear to us—a woman named Miss Rhoda. She was a precious woman of God who impacted our lives in a major way, as well as the lives of many others. As Christians, we believe that we don’t grieve as those without hope, and we take comfort in knowing she’s with the Lord. But her words and encouragement still resonate with me.
One moment with her stands out. She and her husband, Brother Dean, prayed over us during a marriage seminar. I had one of our “You Are Loved” shirts on, and as we were praying, she put her hand on my chest and said, “You know… you’re kinda weird, Dallas.” I couldn’t help but laugh—it was such an unexpected thing to say in the middle of prayer! But then she followed up with, “And that’s a good thing. I want you to know that the Lord made you this way for a purpose.”
She explained that God had taken every part of me—my personality, quirks, even the difficult things I had experienced—and crafted something unique. He had shaped me for a purpose: to let people know that they are loved. Her words were simple but deeply profound.
Created for a Purpose
This brings me to Ephesians 2:10, a passage we reference often at Geek Devotions:
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”
Paul’s words remind us that we were created intentionally. God uses our quirks, strengths, and past struggles to shape us for the good works He has prepared for us. There are things He has placed in our path that only we can do because He has crafted us in a specific way.
Maybe you feel out of place. Maybe you question whether you have a purpose. But I want you to understand this: You are God’s workmanship. You were made for something great. Even if you’re still in a season of being molded, don’t doubt that God has a plan for you.
I’ve experienced both pain and beauty in life, and through it all, God has used those things to shape me into who I am today—a little weird, sure, but created for a purpose. That’s why Geek Devotions exists. That’s why we livestream every Monday night and release a devotion every Friday. It’s all about letting people know they are loved and their lives have meaning.
Take This to Heart
Take a moment to reflect: Has someone ever said something that deeply impacted you? Maybe it encouraged, challenged, or helped you see yourself differently. Hold onto those words. Let them remind you that you matter.
And if you get the chance, speak life into someone else. Let them know that they are seen, have value, and even their quirks are part of something beautiful.
You might be a little weird—but that’s okay. God made you that way for a reason.
