Best Bad Movies of Geek’d Con 2024 – The Bottom Shelf
Blog
Have you ever loved a movie you knew was not a cinematic masterpiece? Welcome to the world of “so bad they’re good” movies! In our latest podcast episode, we take you to Geek’d Con 2024 in Shreveport, Louisiana, where we dive into the quirkiest and most entertaining bad movies that have captured con-goers hearts.
We start with Edwin, who shares his fondness for James Cameron’s Piranha II: The Spawning. Yes, you read that right—James Cameron, the mastermind behind Titanic and Avatar, once directed a movie about flying piranhas. Edwin describes it as “gorily bad, but fun,” and we couldn’t agree more. It’s the kind of movie where the absurdity is its charm.
Next, we have Dustin, who isn’t shy about expressing his mixed feelings toward the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. While many consider it a horror classic, Dustin points out its lack of depth and the endless screaming, making it more of a chore than a thrill. However, he nods to Matthew McConaughey’s performance in Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, calling it a hidden gem worth seeking.
And then there’s Deadpool—yes, the Merc with a Mouth himself—who drops by to discuss his love for the 1992 film Highway to Hell. Starring Chad Lowe and Christy Swanson, this movie features a hot rod journey through hell to save a girlfriend. Deadpool’s take? “My entire movie catalog is a trash fire, and I want you all to come and watch it burn.” Classic Deadpool.
Sam and Madison also join the conversation from the actual Geek Devotions booth, bringing up the original Mortal Kombat movie and Velocipastor. Sam admits that Mortal Kombat is a great movie despite its flaws. At the same time, Madison can’t stop laughing at the sheer ridiculousness of Velocipastor, a film about a pastor who turns into a dinosaur.
Kevin, Branson, and Dallas round out the discussion with their picks. Kevin loves Critters 2 for its unnecessary yet entertaining plot, Branson defends Spider-Man 3’s infamous dance scene, and Dallas has a soft spot for the much-maligned Mario Bros. movie. According to Dallas, “If you took the name Mario off of it, it’s a fun, weird, alternate steampunk, alternate universe film.”
We also get some unique takes from fans like Mike, who shares his bewilderment over The Civil War, and Hunter, Clara, and Jillian, who discuss everything from the original Eric Bana Hulk movie to the cult favorite As Above, So Below.
So, if you’re a fan of movies that are so bad they’re good, this episode is a must-listen. Please tune in for laughs, nostalgia, and a celebration of cinematic misfires that have somehow found a special place in our hearts.
