Stephen King recently released a new book called “Fairy Tale.” This story follows a young man named Charlie, who does his best to be a good man due to past trauma. He often goes the extra mile to help others. In one such “Good Samaritan” event, he helps an elderly gentleman who has fallen. However, when people try to say thank you or talk about his action, he diverts the conversation. He tells people it wasn’t anything special. If the dog, Radar, hadn’t barked, he would have never known anything was wrong. In his own mind, he simply wasn’t anyone special and not good enough for any kind of praise.
We see a similar mindset in the story of Gideon in the book of Judges. Although this isn’t a perfect one for one in the story of Charlie, there is the same feeling of “I’m not a good person, I’m nothing special; I’m just me.” Again, it’s a very relatable feeling. Sometimes it’s a form of false humility, but sometimes it comes genuinely from a poor view of oneself. In the book, Charlie frequently says, “I didn’t save that man; his dog did. I just called 911.” In Judges, Gideon spends a lot of time trying to convince God that he’s no one special, that he wasn’t the one God really wanted to lead His army.
This story can resonate with a lot of people. It reminds us that we aren’t the only ones that feel like this. It reminds us that just because we may not think we can be used to glorify God, it doesn’t mean that God can’t use us. In today’s culture, this is a growing mindset of not being “good enough.” But, at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what you think. On the surface, you may not look like someone who needs to accomplish the great things God has set forth; because you are.
You are the person that God has called according to his purposes. You are the person that God has told to do something. The great commission in Matthew 28:16-20 is written to all of us. We are all called to share Jesus’ love with people daily. It may be through your character and worth ethic in the workplace. Could be through a blog or maybe through streaming on a social platform. It doesn’t matter if you question if you can or should; if God has called you to it, then He has called you to it. God overlooks our flaws and weaknesses. He even plans for the weakness. He Knows you so much better than you think He does, and He has planned around that. So don’t let others and yourself tell you that you can’t do what God has called you to do. Through HIM, you can do it.
