Welcome to week 3 of Dystopian Devotionals Month! This week Celeste and Dallas watched Equilibrium. The promise of the movie (world peace is obtained by the suppression of emotions) led Celeste to the following conclusion; we really do need emotions. Specifically, however, we need Love. What does it look like? How do we live it out? Check out today’s episode and find out!
In the world of Equilibrium, they have created what they consider to be a Utopian society. The way they have accomplished this is that they have taken human emotions out of the equation through a dose of medication every day. The majority of society goes along with this, I mean there is no more war, no more hate, no more pain, offence, hurt, fear, so why not right? Except that there is also no more love, joy, true friendship, or any of the good emotions that the human race has. The story follows one man on his journey from being the top fighter for the government that is instituting these drugs and laws such as “sense offence” meaning that a person feels and must be destroyed. To his finding emotions and choosing them over what is the societal norm.
The overall good movie, but when watching this for this week’s devotion one line stood out to me, someone asked Christian Bale’s character,” What is the purpose of your life? What’s the point?”
The point she was trying to get across with that question is that without love, life doesn’t have a point. Now I understand that in the movie they were probably not referring to Agape love, but you and I know that God is love according to 1st John 4:8. We have a heavenly father who loves us and gives us a purpose.
In 1st Corinthians 13:1-2 it says “If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels but have not love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith to remove mountains but have not love, I am nothing.”
There is a lot we can unpack from this verse, but the main thing is we need love more than any other gift the Father has for us, because without the divine love that only comes from God; what are we doing?
