This week on Geek Devotions, Dallas takes time to talk about a sombre topic, depression and suicide.  Dallas is not a medical professional and doesn’t presume to be one, but in this episode, he does offer some words of advice and wisdom.  123 People Die Daily from Suicide. Don’t be a statistic. Even if you or someone you know is struggling with suicide, please get help. Reach out. Your life is so valuable.

In our devotional, Dallas pointed us to two scriptures to help with the struggle of dealing with depression and thoughts of suicide. The first one contains some pretty practical advise,

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
Philippians 4:8 New International Version (NIV)

Often times when people are feeling depressed they will turn to certain entertainment. Dallas recommends that you take the above verse into consideration when you do so. Watching sad and depressing movies or listening to similar style music may not be the best idea. If anything you may actually be feeding the depression. If you find yourself dwelling on depressive thoughts take time to reflect on the good things in your life. Think about the things God has done and how he’s provided for you in the past.

The next verse that Dallas shares is Psalm 121:5, in the Complete Jewish Bible (CJB)

Adonai is your guardian; at your right hand
Adonai provides you with shade —

Many translations say that God is your “keeper”, but Dallas really liked the imagery of the word guardian found in the CJB. This really gives us a great visual of who God really is. He truly is our guardian He offers shade when things get the worst. If you’re struggling and feel like things are falling apart around you, turn to Him and let Him be your shade.
