This week on Geek Devotions we take a look at HBO’s Fahrenheit 451 and discuss the importance of passing on your history. In the movie, the people lost their history and became a dictatorship for anyone who wished to remember, but what’s the danger if Christians forget their History.
The Question of the Week: Tell us a story of someone in the faith that has challenged you.
In HBO’s Fahrenheit 451, the world has become a strange place from what we know. Books have been banned, and only government-approved information found on “The 9” (the internet) is allowed. When dangerous organisations start uploading “graffiti” onto the 9 a team of firemen are on the case. I know, that last sentence sounds weird, but in this strange world the firemen don’t stop fires, they burn illegal books and hard drives containing illegal thoughts.
In one such sting, one of the main villains, Captain Beatty, exchanges words with an older gentleman who is old enough to remember a time before the censorship. Mockingly says to the gentleman:
After the last of your generation dies, so will words, your memories and the burden of your fake past.
This statement struck Dallas. There is a real danger in forgetting our past. As Christians, we are seeing people actively attempting to rewrite the scriptures and their meaning because the burden of their truth is too much for them. If we aren’t diligent to share our faith with the next generation, we may see the events of Fahrenheit 451 taking place.
He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments;
-Psalms 78:5-7
The Psalmist lays out very clearly the necessity of passing on our faith. Our passing on our faith is to give our children and grandchildren the opportunity to have true hope. Our challenge for you today though is not to share your faith. That should be something that we do naturally. This week we’d like to challenge you to talk with someone older than you and let them share with you the stories of their walk in the faith.
