Celeste and Dallas just got back from the Louisiana Delta Comic-Con in West Monroe. Join them as they break down their thoughts of this Louisiana Delta Community College hosted event and share some pictures too!

BLOG VERSION

Okay guys, so this year has been a con year for us. Three cons in and we’re not stopping. The most recent one was Louisiana Delta Con in West Monroe, and it was a really different experience in the best kind of way.

Getting There

We weren’t able to get off work early enough to set up on Friday, so we drove in, found the convention center, and did what you do after a long drive: we got food. Ended up at a place called Taco Bendito. There’s a rabbit mascot there that is a little terrifying, but the food was really good. We were up at 5 the next morning to get down to the West Monroe Convention Center by around 7:30 to set up. That’s con life.

The Con Itself

Louisiana Delta Con is put on by Louisiana Delta Community College. They ran it on campus last year, it was a huge success, and it outgrew the space. So this year they moved it to the convention center. It might have been a little too big for that too, if we’re being real. This thing is growing fast. The word from Dallas: if somebody wants to donate their facilities to the college, do it, because this could become the Geek Con of West Monroe. It’s got that kind of energy.

The whole team who ran the event was incredibly kind, and the people who came through were the same way. The crowd was also pretty different from what we’re used to at Geek Con. There were a lot of little kids, especially in the morning through early afternoon. Families rolling in straight from soccer and football games, kids still in their jerseys. There was even a kids’ cosplay competition. One sibling duo came as a Hogwarts student and a Mandrake (yes, the screaming plant baby in a pot, and yes, Dallas had to ask what a Mandrake was), and there was a tiny baby in costume that absolutely melted everyone.

There were side rooms running a Smash Bros tournament too, which was a nice touch.

The Cosplay Was Something Else

For our first time at this con, the cosplay really impressed us.

Our friend Liz came as Princess Mononoke and knocked it out of the park. What made it even more impressive is that she had been working on a completely different cosplay for months, then two weeks before the con she posted “guys, don’t be mad at me, but I’ve got another idea.” She made the whole new costume in two weeks. That’s wild. She bought the mask because building that from scratch would have been a whole other level of work, but everything else she made herself. Liz is also one of the cosplay guests this year, which makes sense because she has been leveling up fast. She cosplayed Guts from Berserk at Geek Con two years ago and it was so good.

John Stout was on emcee duty and ran the cosplay competition. He did a really great job of making everyone feel welcome and proud of what they put together. He was also in full costume with makeup that aged him about 20 to 30 years. We appreciate you, John.

One couple that really got our attention: Kitty Pryde and Star Lord. In 10 years of going to cons, we have never seen anyone do Kitty Pryde. She even had the dragon with her. Come to find out, Kitty Pryde and Star Lord actually dated in the comics, and that’s part of why she chose the character. It was just cool.

The Kaiju Number Nine costume from Kaiju Number Eight was something else though. This guy built the whole thing himself. Bodysuit, extra limbs, the works. The helmet was strapped under his jaw so the mouth opened and closed when he talked. His buddy wired the electronics so the eyes glow. When he walked around without the mask on, nobody could figure out what it was supposed to be. Mask goes on and a lot of people still couldn’t place it, which just means the con needs more Kaiju Number Eight fans. Watch it, by the way. A friend of ours literally spiked their phone when they finished the series. He ended up winning one of the awards at the convention, and we talked to him for a good while at the booth. Really cool guy.

He also told us a story about a previous con where someone nearby noticed the electronics in his costume were starting to smoke. He couldn’t smell it himself because he’d lost his sense of smell a couple years back. The person next to him goes, “Hey dude, I think your electronics are burning.” Terrifying. That’s the kind of stuff that happens when you build something that involved.

The Vibe Overall

We’ve been going to Geek Con for 10 years. We know people there. People know us. There’s a level of familiarity to it. Delta Con was the opposite. Outside of John, Liz, and a couple of others, we didn’t really know anybody going in.

It kind of felt like our first con all over again.

That thing where you’re a little uncertain, a little excited, just talking to strangers about their costumes because you’re all there for the same reason. Going to this con took us back to those early years, especially when we first got our booth and all of it was still new. We didn’t expect to walk away feeling that.

It was a warm, family event with a real community feel. If you’re in the West Monroe area and this comes back next year, go. It’s got something special going on.
