Blog Version

Every once in a while, a new Gundam project comes along that immediately grabs your attention—and Mobile Suit GQuuuuuux (pronounced, G-Q-W-U-X) is exactly that kind of show. With powerhouse creators at the helm and a bold new take on the Universal Century, this debut episode has already made waves in the Gundam community.

Let’s dive into our first impressions—spoiler-free up top, with a breakdown of the story details after the warning.

⭐ First Impressions (Spoiler-Free)

🎬 A Dream Team of Creators

Right from the start, Mobile Suit GQuuuuuux makes it clear it’s swinging for the fences. The series, produced by Sunrise in collaboration with Studio Khara (Evangelion), brings together some serious creative firepower.

It’s directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki, known for his work on Evangelion, and written by Yoji Enokido (Sailor Moon, Ouran High School Host Club) and Hideaki Anno (Shin Godzilla, Evangelion). Their combined storytelling style mixes high concept drama with grounded emotional beats, which shows from the first scene.

🎨 Visuals That Pop

The art direction, handled by illustrator Take (Evangelion, Pokémon Horizons), is visually stunning. His creative fingerprints are all over this project—from the expressive linework to the vibrant, high-contrast color palette. The blend of 2D animation with 3D environments adds a dynamic feel, especially when showing the vast, sweeping shots of the colony.

At times, it’s absolutely breathtaking.

🎵 Music That Moves

The score, composed by Yoshimasa Erui (Jujutsu Kaisen, High Score Girl), perfectly complements the tone of the episode and vibe that they are trying to create with this series. It adds charm during the more lighthearted moments and amps up the tension when the action kicks off. The music makes the episode feel fun without sacrificing emotional weight or momentum.

🚨 Spoiler Section: The Story So Far

🛰 An Alternate Universal Century

While the show doesn’t offer a specific date like traditional Gundam series, the opening scene drops enough clues to reveal this is an alternate timeline within the Universal Century—one where the Principality of Zeon actually won the One Year War.

In this new world order:

  • Scrapped mechs are in the hands of average citizens, but they’re strictly unarmed.
  • The Principality of Zeon is actively hunting down a surviving Gundam from the war—one piloted by none other than Char Aznable.
  • In response to this threat, a new Gundam is developed: the GQuuuuuux.

🌌 Life on Side 6

We’re introduced to Amate, a young girl born and raised in the colonies who feels like there’s more to life than the harsh realities of Side 6. This sovereign colony is still reeling from the aftermath of war and harbors deep prejudice against refugees displaced by the conflict.

Amate’s journey begins as a quiet, personal one—but she’s accidentally pulled into the brutal world of underground mech fighting, a subculture formed by those desperate for survival or purpose.

🤖 A Beautiful Collision

Things take a sharp turn when Amate ends up piloting the GQuuuuuux in a desperate fight against the Military Police. The animation in this sequence is top tier. At times, it mirrors the iconic first battle of Amuro Ray in the original Mobile Suit Gundam, both in tone and execution. It’s thrilling, emotional, and perfectly sets the tone for what’s to come.

🚀 Final Thoughts

Episode one of Mobile Suit GQuuuuuux is fast-paced, gorgeous, and rich with potential. It wastes no time establishing a fresh alternate history, delivering beautifully crafted animation, and introducing characters that have a lot of potential.

To paraphrase one of our community members, Mikaski, said in our Discord: We just hope they give it enough episodes to flesh out this world properly.
