But towards the end of the film he does something interesting… He shows kindness to the very villains he fighting. Why is showing kindness, even to those who have done us wrong needed? Join us as Dallas walks us through this very question.
Blog Version
It’s Geekmas here at Geek Devotions, and we’re diving into a fun, festive movie: Merry Little Batman. Why this movie? Because it’s Christmas and Batman! Why not? This movie feels like Home Alone meets the Batcave, with young Damian Wayne front and center in an alternate universe where Batman has retired the cape to focus on being a dad. The result? A sweet, chaotic, and surprisingly heartfelt holiday adventure.
Eager to prove himself, Damian sees the return of Gotham’s criminals as his chance to step into the role of Batman. Unfortunately, his attempts are a bit of a disaster, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. But by the movie’s end, the bad guys are caught, Christmas is saved, and the Waynes share a warm holiday moment.
One moment in particular stands out: Damian feels an unexpected pang of sympathy for the Joker. Despite the Joker’s antics—and Bruce’s reminder that the clown prince of crime had recently tried to BASH HIS FACE IN WITH A HAMMER—Damian sees something deeper. The Joker, in his own twisted way, was seeking companionship. This realization leads to an unexpected act of kindness: Damian and Bruce invite the Joker and his parole officer to share a meal at a burger joint. This small gesture of grace is what we’re unpacking today.
NOTE: This is very much a child’s version of the world of Batman. In this world, Joker and the other villains are nowhere near as devious and evil as in other properties.
Seeing Beyond the Surface
In Merry Little Batman, Damian recognizes something easy to miss: the root cause of someone’s behavior. The Joker’s loneliness and despair drove him to act out in destructive ways. While this doesn’t excuse his actions, it does provide context—and an opportunity for healing.
This is a reflection of real life. Often, harmful behaviors stem from deep pain, loss, or a fractured sense of identity. Addressing these root causes takes more than punishment; it takes kindness and understanding. Damian’s simple act of inviting the Joker to dinner is a small yet profound example of this principle in action.
The Golden Rule in Action
The Bible gives us a timeless principle for moments like these. Matthew 7:12 says, “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” This Golden Rule challenges us to treat others with the same kindness and grace we hope to receive.
Think about it: none of us would want to be discarded or ignored in our darkest moments. We’d hope for someone to see past our mistakes and offer a chance for redemption. Damian’s actions reflect this mindset. He doesn’t excuse the Joker’s wrongdoings, but he chooses to show compassion, creating a moment of peace and connection.
Kindness Can Change Lives
Showing kindness to someone who’s hurt us or others isn’t easy. It goes against our natural instincts to seek revenge or retribution. But kindness can be transformative. It doesn’t erase consequences or undo harm but can plant healing and redemption seeds.
Many of us are where we are today because someone showed us kindness when we didn’t deserve it. They saw our struggles, addressed the root causes, and helped us heal. Now, we have the opportunity to do the same for others.
A Challenge for All of Us
Imagine a world where we focus on addressing root problems rather than just reacting to symptoms. What if we chose to extend grace instead of responding to hurt with more hurt? Doing so could break cycles of anger and hatred, creating space for healing and growth.
Here are a couple of questions to reflect on:
- How would I want someone to treat me in my lowest moments?
- Am I addressing the root causes of conflict or just reacting to surface-level symptoms?
If we embrace this mindset, we can catch issues early before they spiral out of control. Small acts of kindness—a kind word, a helping hand, or even just listening—can make a world of difference.
Closing Thoughts
Merry Little Batman is more than a fun holiday movie; it’s a reminder of the power of kindness. As we celebrate this season, let’s look for opportunities to extend grace to those around us, even when it’s hard. After all, we never know how one small act of kindness might change someone’s life.
So, devoted geeks, let’s follow Damian’s example (minus the destruction) and be agents of compassion in our world. And remember, no matter what you’re going through, you are loved, you are cared for, and there is a purpose for your life. Don’t give up.
