Moving Forward: A Look at Maboroshi (2023)

Have you ever felt trapped in the past, holding onto pain or clinging to comfort out of fear of what lies ahead? Today, we’re exploring Maboroshi, a 2023 anime that dives into the cost of staying stuck and the hope of moving forward, even when it’s difficult.

The Story of Maboroshi

Maboroshi tells the tale of a young man and his friends living in a town mysteriously suspended in time after a disaster. In their world, stability depends on staying the same. No one can move forward without threatening the balance they’ve clung to for a decade. Then, a wild girl arrives—a stranger who doesn’t belong to this frozen reality. Her presence challenges them to confront a painful truth: to heal, they must let go of the past, risking the stability they’ve relied on.

Clinging to Comfort: A Lesson from Isaiah

This story mirrors a deep truth about trauma and change. Often, when we experience hardship, it’s easy to stay where we feel safe—even if it means we aren’t truly healing. The characters in Maboroshi are much like Israel in the Book of Isaiah. By chapter 43, Israel had been in captivity for years, and many had accepted that they’d never escape. But God called them to release the past and trust in Him for something new:

“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”
Isaiah 43:18-19

Moving Forward in Faith

Just as Israel was called to move beyond captivity, Maboroshi challenges its characters—and us—to leave the past behind and trust in what’s ahead. Letting go can feel overwhelming, especially when doubts and fears cloud the path. But healing and growth require courage.

Reflection Questions

This week, take a moment to reflect:

  • Are there things from the past that you’re holding onto out of fear?
  • Are you choosing comfort over the new things God has for you?

God promises to walk with us through the unknown, bringing life and growth. Trust Him as He leads you forward, and believe that He is doing something new in you.
