In this week’s Bat-Month devotional, Celeste dives into the wisdom Alfred offers Bruce Wayne in “Before the Batman.” Alfred’s advice to “stop running from something and start running to something” reminds us of the importance of seeking godly counsel. Just like Alfred’s perspective helps Bruce, we too need people in our lives who can offer guidance when we’re too close to see clearly. Join us as we explore Proverbs 14:12 and discuss how discernment and trusted advice can keep us on the right path. To hear more, watch this episode now!

Welcome back to another installment of Bat-Month here at Geek Devotions! This August, we’re diving deep into the world of Batman, exploring the many lessons that the Caped Crusader and his allies can teach us. In today’s devotional, Celeste looks at Alfred’s role in shaping Bruce Wayne and how his wisdom can guide us in our lives.
The Power of Wise Counsel
In the book Before the Batman, which gives us a glimpse into the backstory of Robert Pattinson’s Batman, we see Bruce Wayne navigating the tumultuous waters of his youth. He’s dealing with the immense trauma of losing his parents, and like many of us, he tries to handle it all on his own. Bruce begins sneaking out at night, engaging in street racing, thinking he’s outsmarting Alfred, his trusted guardian. But, as it turns out, Alfred knew all along. Instead of reprimanding Bruce, Alfred shares a piece of advice that hits home: “Why don’t you stop running from something and start running to something?”
This simple yet profound statement powerfully reminds us of the value of godly counsel. Alfred, with his life experience and love for Bruce, sees the bigger picture. He’s able to offer guidance that Bruce can’t see on his own because he’s too close to the situation. This is something we all need—someone who can look at our lives from the outside and provide wise, loving counsel.
Proverbs 14:12 – A Warning for Us All
Celeste highlights Proverbs 14:12 in the devotional, which says, “There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death.” This verse is a stark reminder that our judgment can be flawed, especially when we’re emotionally invested in a situation. We might think we’re on the right path, but without seeking advice from those we trust, we could be heading toward disaster.
Alfred’s advice to Bruce is a perfect example of why we need to be open to the wisdom of others, especially those who have walked similar paths before us. It’s easy to get caught up in what seems right at the moment, but having someone who can offer an outside perspective can make all the difference.
Being the Alfred in Someone’s Life
It’s not just about seeking counsel, though. Celeste challenges us to also be that source of wisdom for others. We all have experiences and insights that can help guide our friends and loved ones. However, it’s crucial that we do so with discernment. Not everyone’s advice is worth taking, and not everyone is in a position to give godly counsel. We need to be sure that the advice we’re giving or receiving is rooted in love and truth.
As we continue through Bat-Month, let’s take a moment to reflect on the people in our lives who have offered us guidance and wisdom. Are we listening to them? Are we open to their advice? And are we ready to step up and offer the same to others?
Join us next week as we continue to explore more lessons from the world of Batman. And remember, no matter where you are on your journey, you are loved, cared for, and God has a plan and purpose for your life.
