Dealing with Trust Issues | Fallout Devotional – Geek Devotions
Blog Version
In a world where trust is scarce, navigating relationships can feel like maneuvering through a minefield. The post-apocalyptic setting of the popular game series and recent TV show, “Fallout,” paints a vivid picture of the challenges of trust in a fractured society. In one of its recent adaptations, we encounter Lucy, a character grappling with trust issues after leaving the safety of her vault. Her journey mirrors the struggles many of us face when trust is broken, and relationships are tested.
Where does trust begin?
The foundation of trust begins with placing our faith in God. Psalm 118:8 reminds us,
“It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man.” (ESV)
While human relationships are essential, they can never replace the steadfastness of God’s love and care for us. Trusting in God provides a secure anchor in the stormy seas of life, even when human relationships falter.
Building Trust in Community
However, we are not meant to journey through life alone. God designed us to be in community where trust is essential for healthy relationships to thrive. So, how do we build that community? Philippians 2:3-4 exhorts us:
“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility, count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” (ESV)
Building trust within a community requires intentional effort and a willingness to extend grace to one another.
Restoring Broken Trust
Yet, trust can be fragile, and wounds inflicted by betrayal run deep. When trust is broken, Colossians 3:12-13 offers a roadmap for restoration:
“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.” (ESV)
We are called to clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, and patience, extending forgiveness as God has forgiven us. Restoring trust requires vulnerability and a commitment to reconciliation, even in the face of pain and hurt.
Trust remains a precious commodity in a world tainted by betrayal and disappointment. Just as Lucy navigated the complexities of trust in Fallout, we, too, must learn to lean on God while extending trust to others. By prioritizing humility, forgiveness, and grace, we can foster communities where trust thrives, leaving behind a legacy of hope and healing.
