Does what you do really matter? | Watership Down Devotional – Geek Devotions

Written Devotion

In the classic novel “Watership Down,” we delve into the intricate world of rabbits. Amidst their adventures, a significant scene unfolds, drawing parallels to what could be considered a lesser-known biblical account in 2nd Samuel.

The Battle of Warrens

As Hazel and Bigwig strive to protect their warren from invading rabbits, Bigwig’s unwavering courage shines through. Despite facing overwhelming odds, he valiantly defends his home, echoing the spirit of biblical figures who stood their ground in the face of adversity, saying:

“My head rabbit said to protect the warren until he got back. So that’s what I’m gonna do.”

Drawing Inspiration from Shammah

In 2nd Samuel, we encounter the lesser-known hero, Shammah, who valiantly defends a field of lentils against the Philistine army. Despite the insignificance of his task, Shammah’s unwavering loyalty to his king exemplifies the importance of faithfulness in the seemingly mundane aspects of life. In fact, through his faithfulness, we see this:

“So the Lord brought about a great victory.” – 2 Samuel 23:12 (NLT)

The Importance of Faithfulness

In our Christian journey, we often encounter what some would call trivial or unimportant tasks. Yet, in these moments of obedience, our character is forged, and our faithfulness is tested. Whether cleaning the church bathroom or extending kindness to a difficult colleague, every act of service plays a vital role in God’s grand design.

Small Acts, Big Impact

Just as Shammah’s defense of the lentil field paved the way for a great victory, our faithfulness in the small things lays the groundwork for greater opportunities and blessings. Whether seen or unseen, our acts of service contribute to the flourishing of God’s kingdom.

Embracing Faithfulness

In a world that values recognition and grandeur, let us remember the significance of faithfulness in the seemingly insignificant tasks of life. Whether cleaning bathrooms or extending a friendly gesture, every act of service is a testament to our commitment to God’s kingdom. As we navigate life’s challenges, may we emulate the unwavering courage of Bigwig and the steadfast loyalty of Shammah. Let us embrace every opportunity to serve with faithfulness, knowing that our small acts of obedience pave the way for God’s greater purposes to be fulfilled.
