Recently, we had some issues with our PS4, and a significant discussion was had about upgrading to a PS5. This, of course, led to a conversation about backward compatibility. This led Dallas to think about how things from the Old Testament work or don’t work within the framework of the New Testament.

Hey there, Geek Devotions community! Today, we’re diving into a recent struggle we faced here at Geek Devotions – the impending demise of our trusty PS4. It’s been our gaming haven and an essential tool for Geek Devotions, but alas, it’s on the brink of retirement.

I spent last weekend attempting every trick in the book to resurrect it – database resets, reformatting, the whole shebang. Unfortunately, all my efforts were in vain, leaving me with a mixture of sadness and frustration. The PS4 holds unfinished gaming adventures and is a vital part of our Geek Devotions ministry. So, what’s the solution?

Amid my gaming console crisis, a friend suggested the ultimate fix – upgrading to a PS5. The revelation struck me: the PS5 is backward compatible! This excited Celeste and me, and now we’re on a mission to save up for the shiny new console in the coming months.

This got me thinking about upgrades, backward compatibility, and, strangely enough, the connection between the Old and New Testaments in the Bible. Some folks struggle with the relevance of the Old Testament, wondering if it matters in the age of the New Testament and Jesus’ covenant. Well, let me break it down for you.

Jesus himself addressed this concern in Matthew 5:17, stating that he didn’t come to abolish the law or the prophets but to fulfill them. The Old Testament serves as a roadmap pointing to Jesus, from Genesis to his second return. Just as the PS5 runs PS4 games, but better, the New Testament clarifies and enhances the principles of the Old Testament.

Jesus takes it a step further by simplifying things. He emphasizes love – love for God and love for others – as the core commandments. In Matthew 22, he boils it down to loving God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and loving your neighbor as yourself. This simplification echoes the internal transformation required rather than merely adhering to external rules.

However, not everything from the Old Testament carries over. Some laws, like animal sacrifices, become obsolete with Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice. It’s like an old PS1 controller not connecting to a PS5 – this isn’t because “culture has changed.” But the very situation has changed, and certain practices no longer apply because they

Now, you might wonder, why bother with the Old Testament? Here are three simple reasons:

  1. Insight into God’s Nature: The Old Testament provides a comprehensive view of God’s character and nature. Reading only the New Testament can leave you lacking a full understanding of God. The Old Testament and New Testament together reveal the unchanging nature of God.
  2. Understanding the New Testament: Many events and teachings in the New Testament gain depth and significance when understood in the context of the Old Testament. It’s like playing a sequel without knowing the original – you miss crucial background information.
  3. Scripture is Valuable: In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, Paul emphasizes that all scripture is beneficial for teaching, rebuking, and encouraging. This includes the Old Testament, providing valuable lessons and insights.

So, while we’ve embraced the PS5 and the New Covenant, we recognize the importance of delving into the Old Testament.

Let’s challenge ourselves to explore the Old Testament, understanding what carries over and what doesn’t. Much like upgrading our gaming console, upgrading our understanding of the Bible enriches our experience and deepens our connection with God. Happy gaming, and happy reading!
