Disney + recently released the first two episodes of Percy Jackson. In the opening episode Sally Jackson, Percy’s mom has to reassure him of who he is and remind him that he’s not broken. What can we learn from this? Are we broken? Join us as Celeste dives into these questions.
Written Devotional
In The first episode of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” we meet Sally Jackson, Percy’s mom. From all accounts, Sally is a good mom who cares about her son. Amid the episode, Percy tells Sally that he believes his brain is broken and that he’s scared it has broken even more. Later in the episode, Sally says this:
“You are not broken. You are singular. You are a miracle. You are my son.”
Today on Geek Devotions, we’re talking about how we are not broken as children of God.
As we said in the intro, Sally’s statement to her son resonated with me. It got me thinking about how we come to God broken and sinful, but we are made whole through Jesus’ miraculous sacrifice. Obviously, this is not a 1-for-1 analogy. Instead, this devotional thought is the product of the rabbit trail my brain went down when she was consoling her son.
2nd Corinthians 5:17 tells us this.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
When we accept Christ’s salvation, we become new creations. It may take us a bit to live that out entirely. It may take a bit to fully walk in that identity as a child of God. However, the longer we make the daily choice to serve and follow Jesus, the more like Jesus we begin to be.
At least, that should be what happens. It’s the growth of Christianity. We are made new, and as a result, we have to put in the work so our spiritual muscles can grow.
