This week on Geek Devotions, special guest Robbie of The Healing Place School of Ministry continues our theme of Anime April with a great devotion coming from Katsuhiro Otomo 2004 “Steamboy”

The film is centered around one small thing that can build and destroy. We also have something small that can build and destroy and it is important that we learn to control it. But how do we do it?

SteamboyIn Katsuhiro Otomo’s 2004 “Steamboy,” everyone is obsessed with a small insignificant looking device called the Steam Ball. The ball was a bit strange looking but still nothing extraordinary about it except one thing. Inside it held the ability to destroy and create. It was filled with a high density of special steam. This ball was the most powerful and dangerous item in existence.

In this week’s devotion , Robbie takes a look at something fairly simple. We are all carrying something that’s nothing very extraordinary but is exceptional at the same time. It is something that has the power to create yet also something very destructive. It is the most powerful and dangerous item in existence…

What is this thing? It is your tongue.

James 3:4-6 details the strength of the tongue.

And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches.

But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.  And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.

You can use your tongue to lift people up or tear people down. Lifting people up can happen in a variety of ways. If you know they are struggling to accomplish a task, remind them that they can do it! If they are struggling with self-esteem issues because of their body shape or looks, remind them that they are made in the image of God and compliment something about them. Even something simple as saying “Hey, I appreciate you,” cause a wellspring of life to take place in a person’s heart.

Make the choice today to use your tongue to lift people up and encourage them. Make the choice to speak life.
