In Hebrews 11, we see the source of Noah’s righteousness and how it was credited to him through his faith. But what did building the ark really have to do with that? Let’s talk about it.

“By faith, Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.” — Hebrews 11:7

To understand the story, you need to go back to Genesis chapter six, where this very event takes place. The world had grown very corrupt, and things were going downhill quickly. God spoke to Noah and said, essentially: Noah, there’s coming a time when I’m going to have to bring correction. The only way to correct this is for me to flood the earth. But I’ve chosen you to be a man who’s going to make a difference in the world. And then God quite literally instructed Noah to build an ark, collect all kinds of animals, and bring his family to be saved.

Here’s the deal, though: this didn’t happen overnight. It took many, many years. For decades, people watched Noah build this ark and questioned him. They wondered what was happening. It didn’t make sense. They’d ask him, “Noah, what are you doing?” And he’d say, “The rain is coming. There’s a flood coming. I need to build this ark.” And people just thought he was crazy. Why? Because it didn’t make sense. Nobody had ever seen it rain like that before. Nobody had ever heard of a massive, worldwide flood. And after decades of him just tooling away, building this boat, it looked like he was just insane.

But he was faithful to the Word of God. Faithful to the promise the Lord gave him.

And he was faithful for a reason. He loved the Lord, and he knew there was a greater purpose behind this. He knew that if he were not faithful in what was before him today, the generations down the road, his family, would not be spared.

See, that’s the thing. Sometimes God gives you a word today that doesn’t make sense. You don’t see what He says is coming. But He has a purpose for it. And it’s up to you and me, as individuals, to take that word and be faithful — to steward that word and do what He’s calling us to do. Even if people look at us and go, “That’s crazy. That doesn’t make sense. Why would you do this?”

Because generations down the road, there will be an impact. For Noah, it literally was a shift for the entire world.

For you, what could happen because of your faithfulness today? How could that impact people tomorrow?

What has God given you that maybe you’re starting to question because it’s been so long since He gave it to you? Are you going, “Is this real, Lord? Is this really something I need to hold onto? Did you actually speak this to me, or is this just a figment of my imagination? People are telling me I’m crazy.”

I want to encourage you, lean into the Lord. Do not let the lies of the enemy hold you back and keep you from walking in what He has for you. Be faithful in what He has given you.
