In the 2013 movie Pacific Rim, we are introduced to a world in which Kaiju are coming in through another dimension, and earth has decided to fight back with giant robots because what else would you do? In it, there is what they call a neural handshake, where 2 or 3 people come together, share memories and thoughts, and control the Jaegers. So there are a few things we can pull from as Christians, and that’s what we are talking about today on Geek Devotions!
As we said in the intro, we can take a few things from the neural handshake of the Jaeger Pilots as Christians.
We need to trust others
It’s important to trust others. We’ve discussed before that true community means that you have someone you trust with all your junk, and they trust you with theirs. Otherwise known as confession. When the pilots are in the Jaegar, they are literally sharing each other’s memories. At one point in the movie, Ralegh and Mako are in a drift, and they do what’s called “chase the rabbit.” Mako gets so engrossed in a memory that she does not realize it is not real. Ralegh being there with her in the memory is able to help her out of it and even process it a bit once they’re not in the drift.
It’s ok to ask for help.
Newt needed help, and Dr.Gottelieb helped him even though he thought he was crazy. But it wasn’t easy to ask for help. Newt and Dr. Gottelieb each struggled with their own pride. Pride told them that they couldn’t or shouldn’t ask for help. The truth of the matter is that it is ok to ask for help, and we shouldn’t allow pride to keep us from doing so.
Trust in Holy Spirit
Much like the drift requires two people to share the load, living a life for God requires you to share that load with Holy Spirit. There is a saying out there that God never gives you more than you can handle, and I genuinely dislike it. The more accurate statement should be that God never gives you more than He can handle. Holy Spirit wants to help you, He leads you and directs you. You just have to be open to him.
