Welcome to week one of our Who Dunn It Month! This week Dallas takes a look at the series/movie Enola Holmes! Enola is the little known sister of Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes. Enola is a determined young lady who is every bit as sharp as your big brothers. However, there is a moment in her story where she is confronted with both a harsh word and a gentle one… how do these affect her? How do they affect you? Join us to find out?
Enola Holme is the younger sister of Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes. She has inherited the same intelligence and knack for deduction as her older brothers. In the film, Enola Holmes, her mother has gone missing and she goes on a quest to find out why and how. At the same time, she’s on the run from Mycroft who’s plan is simply to place Enola into a girl’s home. During her journey, she also comes across a very curious case. She meets a young Marquee who’s on the run. Who is out to murder this young man?
Sadly, she is captured by Mycroft and placed in that girl’s home. During this portion of the story, Mycroft and the headmistress work to tear her down. They speak harshly to her and belittle her. Her spirit becomes, broken. But then Sherlock comes to visit her. At the beginning of the conversation, you can tell that she’s expecting the same poor treatment from her other brother. She expects him to tear her down and belittle her. Instead, she finds something different. Sherlock, in his own way, encourages her. He affirms the talents and skills that she possesses. After this interaction, there’s a new passion and fire that is lit up inside of her. Why is this? Let’s look at a simple truth expressed in the scriptures.
“A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.”
Proverbs 15:4 (English Standard Version | ESV)
This simple truth is one that every believer needs to cling to. The way we talk to people can bring life or death to them. Speaking with a gentle tongue is not to be confused with always saying nice things. You can still present hard, possibly unwanted truths, with gentleness. Presenting things with a harsh tone and spirit not only breaks a person’s spirit but when you try to present a truth, they will deny that truth. As believers, we need to learn to control how we talk and how we present things. If we learn to speak with gentleness, we may encourage the next great detective, the next great doctor, the next great friend.
