This week, the news came out that Peter Mayhew has passed away. And the world of geek-dom has lost one of it’s beloved Giants. Mr.Mayhew is best known as the man behind our favorite Wookie, but his accomplishments and impact on the world are much farther reaching than that.
Peter Mayhew wrote two books for a younger audience: Growing Up Giantwhich explains that being different is a strength instead of a weakness, and an anti-bullying book for children entitled My Favorite Giant, a graphic novel, both were co-written by Angie Mayhew.

Mr. Mayhew also raised money using the Peter Mayhew Foundation which is devoted to the alleviation of disease, pain, suffering, and the financial toll brought on by life’s traumatic events. By providing available resources directly to deserving children and adults in need, the foundation assists numerous charitable organizations in promoting and boosting their effectiveness and giving support where needed.

We had the opportunity to meet Mr.Mayhew, and I must say from a personal standpoint, he was a pleasure to be around. We went to the first Geek’d Con ( a local comic convention http://geekdcon.com) Peter was the headliner. He was kind, patient and spoke something personal to everyone in line. I talked to him as he was signing a poster for me about The Peter Mayhew Foundation and let him know how cool I thought it was, that he had taken his fame, and used it for good. He told me that he felt a responsibility to share with others what he had been blessed with.

Mr.Mayhew will be remembered fondly by many, and his legacy is more than the co-pilot of the millennium falcon, but of a man who lived up to his stature.
